Master Planning | 20,660 Square Foot Addition and Renovation
Initially hired to create a master plan for the existing Library, Lothrop Associates then completed a 14,000 square foot renovation and 6,600 square foot addition, upgrading the building to accommodate the needs of a modern library. The newly renovated Library is organized by acoustic levels — separating quiet and noisy areas on opposite sides of the building. It also includes a unique design feature for patrons when they enter the building: after passing the main service desk, when patrons would normally have been greeted with high and narrow stacks, they now encounter a voluminous, naturally lit central browsing collection “garden” displayed on shelving, radiating through a forest of trees complimented with comfortable seating. Additionally, to enhance the building use for the community, a separate exterior entrance for the community room was designed for use after normal operating hours.
