What about architecture interests you?
I love the challenges that an architectural project commands. Architecture, to me, is the art of problem-solving. For example, our clients have a specific set of project goals. We, as architects, have to figure out how to achieve those goals, despite all of the forces that are normally working against us. We have to manage all of these forces, effectively and simultaneously, in order to be successful.
How has your role expanded or changed over the years?
That’s an interesting question. I, like many architects, started out as a draftsman and worked my way up through the ranks, only to become a manager of people and the business of architecture. You really have to focus on getting back to the creative part of architecture.
What does a typical day at the office (or outside the office) look like?
I really don’t think there is a “typical day.” One day you could be in the office drafting toilet rooms for a project, and the next day, out in the field standing 4 stories up on scaffolding, looking at a hole in a masonry wall and trying to determine how to rebuild a parapet.
What’s your best advice to someone starting in the industry?
Study the construction materials and assemblies, and fully understand how they must interact to create the whole.
Other than architecture, design + construction, what do you enjoy?
I really love photography. I’m a self taught, amature photographer. And, again, I think it’s because I love the challenge of trying to figure out just how to create that one beautiful image using composition, light, shadow, and color.
What is something fun that we might not know about you?
I went skydiving a few years ago. And, I have the video to prove it.
